Coming soon are illustrations of the proposed Contemplative Viewing Platform and the proposed Ranger Garage/Maintenance building.
The concepts below were generated at the July 17-19, 2009 Public Open House (photos).
Click on the graphics below to see larger images. Your comments on these concepts are welcomed - please email susan@sdrp.org. or visit our new blog where you can add a comment and read what others have written. Comments are due by the end of August. Please put "Lagoon Center Comment" in the Subject Line. The Architect Team will then begin refining these initial concepts into more complete designs.
This phase of design, the Concept Design phase, was funded by a grant from the Sempra Foundation to the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy.
The Architect Team (Roesling Nakamura & Terada Architects, Spurlock-Poirier Landscape Architects, and The Acorn Group Interpretive Planners) began the design open house with several different alternative concepts, based on pre-meetings they had held with community groups that are actively involved with the River Park and the Lagoon, as well as with River Park staff. Over the course of the weekend the alternative ideas were narrowed to one preferred concept, and then subsequently refined. Now we need your input on the proposed designs and interpretive themes! After the end of August, the architects will finalize the plans, based on the comments received, and then the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority and San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy will begin seeking funds for construction, through grant applications, partnerships, sponsorships and donations.

Click here to review the narrative (in pdf) that describes features and goals associated with the design concepts. The uses are separated into several structures, beginning with the most utilitarian, a maintenance area and garage for Ranger vehicles at the northwest corner of the site; the Center, located generally in the east-west center of the property, consists of ranger/admin offices and a research lab on one side, with exhibit display, bookstore, video viewing area and classroom/meeting space on the other, joined by a courtyard. The above uses are for the most part tucked into the slope between the upper trail and the lower trail to minimize their visual impact. The roof of the center forms a large view deck with a graceful shade structure. Separately, a viewing deck for silent contemplation and bird-watching, would be located by itself nearer the eastern portion of the site.
