REACH THE BEACH TRAIL STUDY
The San Dieguito River Park is studying possible trail routes to extend the Coast to Crest Trail in Del Mar to the beach. This trail segment would help us achieve our goal of completing the 55-mile long Coast to Crest Trail from the headwaters at Volcan Mountain to the beach. The graphics show the many challenges associated with building a multi-use trail along this westernmost 1.4-mile section from Jimmy Durante Boulevard to the sand at “dog beach”. Based on site visits, information about the project area, and input from trail user groups and the community we have identified possible trail routes on both the north and south sides of the San Dieguito River. The trail routes face obstacles such as crossing Jimmy Durante Boulevard, the railroad tracks, and Camino del Mar as well as adjacency to sensitive wetlands and existing development. We will select the most feasible route as the preferred trail alignment for further environmental review. This will put us in a better position for future grant opportunities to fund trail construction.
