From 2005 to 2007, the San Dieguito River Park held a variety of craft workshops on the first Saturday morning of each month at the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmhouse. Listed below are some of the events that were held. Once the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmhouse is rebuilt (grand re-opening is scheduled for June 26th) we hope to resume these craft workshops that celebrate the spirit of craftsmanship in the community.
“Saturday Morning at Sikes” Series
Built about 1870, the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead is one of the oldest structures in San Diego County and one of the few remaining adobes in the region. It is located at the gateway to the San Pasqual Valley Agricultural Preserve and is part of the San Dieguito River Park. Full restoration of the site is underway and will one day offer visitors a glimpse of Old California.
All sessions are from 10:00 a.m. to noon

Saturday, February 4th: The Art of Soap Making
Diane McNally, founder of “Sassy Suds” a local soap making business doesn’t make lye with wood ashes like the settlers did in the late 1800s but she does make her products from pure food grade ingredients. She knows all about the history of saponification (soap making) and is unimpressed with the supposed progress of making soap; most commercial soaps don’t even have the word “soap” on the label. Come out to the Adobe and see a demonstration of hot process soap making and what it entails in this day and age to pamper yourself with the real McCoy! (Soap samples available) No materials needed , but do bring a jacket as the house is unheated.
Saturday, March 4th: Quilting Made Simple
A longtime member of the Friendship Quilters and the North County Quilters Guild, Wendy Mathson also teaches quilting classes through Palomar College’s Community Education department. Her love of fabric, color, and texture inspires her to both study and master the techniques for making a variety of quilts, from quick and easy “cuddle” quilts to textile art pieces. This session includes a discussion and demonstration of how quilt making evolved from the pioneering era into the 21st century and the “modern” methods used today. A number of antique quilts will be on display and kits and patterns available for those who would like to make a charity quilt at home. No materials needed.
Saturday, April 1st: Woodworking: Beautiful Boxes
Hunter “Butch” Baskins of the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association and President of the North County Woodworking Club, has been in the business of woodworking for over thirty years! What began as a passion for building boxes led him into creating individual decorative keepsake boxes incorporating multiple species of wood and inlay of burl and assorted stones. This class is designed to teach the basic principles and practices of fine woodworking. The tools and techniques have changed somewhat over time but the basic process of box building still requires patience and more patience! The presentation includes a hands-on assembly of kit boxes. No materials required.
