Sikes Adobe Farmhouse
Restoration
May 2003 Progress Report
The following photographs were taken during May
2003.
The entire roof is scheduled for replacement. Where
salvageable it will be reused. On May 1st, the center section
was removed.

To make sure that everything can be replaced where
it belongs, all salvageable parts were carefully labeled as they
were removed.
Prior to removing the roof, the wallpaper section
was studied and then covered with plastic.

During the week of May 5th, the southern portion
of the farmhouse was lifted so that the footings can be
replaced. The purpose is to seismically retrofit the structure. Although
the adobe kitchen cannot be lifted, the walls will be stabilized
with a metal band at the ceiling line. This of course is
not historic, but is required per the City of San Diego building
code. It will help protect anyone who might be standing
next to one of the walls if there were an earthquake that caused
the wall to crumble.
The following pictures show the sequence of raising
the southern portion.
