RANGER I
Salary $21.00 Hourly
DEFINITION
The duties of this position are to protect, preserve and interpret park areas; assist the visiting public toward appropriate and enjoyable use of parks; train and work with volunteers; plan, align and supervise the construction and maintenance of trails; perform park operational duties including administration, safety, rule formulation and enforcement, landscape maintenance, facility repair and construction; and perform related work. This position does not require “law enforcement” certification or experience in law enforcement. The Ranger I positions report to the Senior Supervising Ranger.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Work with other park staff, consultants, and other agency staff to plan, align and design trails; Supervise volunteers, Urban Corps, California Conservation Corps, California Dept. of Forestry and/or Sheriff crews in the construction, maintenance and cleaning of trails and staging areas;
- Answer general questions from the public and explain park policies and regulations;
- Patrol the park and enforce park standards;
- Maintain records of ranger-related activities and volunteer hours (for reporting to the Park’s Volunteer Coordinator) and prepare reports;
- Perform minor maintenance and repair work on park vehicles, power tools and equipment, and park facilities;
- Supervise the implementation and maintenance of revegetation projects;
- Work with other park staff and volunteers to develop, administer, and support interpretive programs and volunteer training programs, i.e., volunteer docents and patrols; Supervise and back-up the Volunteer Patrol;
- Maintain a presence and act as an information source at trailheads, staging areas, and along trails;
- Perform basic trail and facilities maintenance, including trash pickup and disposal, as needed;
- Lead hikes and prepare and give presentations, as needed;
- Cooperate and communicate with Park administrative staff and other Park Rangers to minimize duplication of effort and maximize effectiveness;
- Design and implement (with assistance from Park staff and others) interpretive displays, kiosks, etc.;
- Advise and supervise Scout Projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The ability and willingness to communicate, cooperate and coordinate with other staff members.
General Knowledge of:
Principles of park facility management including construction, restoration, utility repair, landscape maintenance and equipment repair. Principles and practices involved in protecting, maintaining and enhancing park natural areas. Trail alignment, construction and maintenance. Public relations and interpretive techniques in a park environment. Working with, training and motivating volunteers. Principles of park planning. Plant and animal species native to the San Diego area. Cultural and historical background of the San Dieguito River Valley.
SKILLS
Good communication skills, both written and oral a must. Understand and follow written and oral instruction. Communicate effectively with park staff, park visitors, volunteers and a wide variety of community groups. Understand, explain and enforce park rules and regulations, municipal ordinances, and State or Federal laws. PC832 certification is required within 6 months of hire date. Know and apply techniques related to basic First Aid and CPR. “First responder” first-aid and CPR is required within 90 days of hire date. Develop interpretive programs based on resources at park sites. Effectively use a wide variety of hand tools and certain power tools. Operate automotive and other mechanical equipment used in park operations and maintenance. Perform basic and intermediate maintenance on park facilities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Education, training and experience which would demonstrate the application of the knowledge and skills listed above. Education and experience for the Ranger II and Senior Park Ranger positions should include a bachelor’s Education and experience for the Ranger I position should include an associate degree from an accredited community college and preferably one year of experience as described above.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequent and extensive walking, climbing, and lifting weighted objects. Use of mechanical equipment. Workweek will generally include at least one weekend day.

A valid California driver’s license is required. Proof of Covid 19 vaccine.
PROMOTION POTENTIAL
Salary increases and promotions are based solely on merit as reflected in the employee evaluation. Employees’ performances will be evaluated annually at a minimum, with merit increases to be determined annually. Each new employee is on probationary status for the first six months.

RANGER AIDE
Salary $15.00 Hourly
DEFINITION
The Park Ranger Aide position is an entry-level position intended to be an introduction to Parks and Recreation management. The duties of this position are to work with a team of park rangers to protect, preserve and interpret park areas; assist the visiting public toward appropriate and enjoyable use of parks; work with volunteers; help with the construction and maintenance of trails; perform operational duties including trail rules enforcement, landscape maintenance, facility repair and construction; and perform related work. This position does not require “law enforcement” certification or experience in law enforcement. The Park Ranger Aide position reports to the Senior Supervising Ranger.

- Answer general questions from the public and explain park policies and regulations;

- Operate automotive and other mechanical equipment used in park operations and maintenance.
- Perform basic and intermediate maintenance on park facilities.
- Ability to handle correspondence, appointments and other work details without the assistance of a secretary.
LICENSE: A valid California Driver License is required at the time of hire.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Education, training and experience which would demonstrate the application of the knowledge and skills listed above. Must have a High School diploma.
