The San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count identified 127 species in April- a new record for this month! No new bird species were seen this month, so the cumulative species total remains at 242. Click here for the PDF document with the detailed monthly results through April 2019.

According to Bird Count Leader Jayne Lesley, “We were very fortunate to have a break in the rain for a beautiful morning of birding. We had a perfect convergence of lingering winter visitors, arriving summer breeders, and passing through migrants. And for a cacophony of morning bird song!”

The featured image of a Green-winged Teal was taken at the San Dieguito Lagoon by SDRP Trail Patrol Volunteer Ginni Kitchen in February 2017. According to the Audubon Guide to North American Birds, the Green-winged Teal is “our smallest dabbling duck.” It is a very common wintering species in the area.
