The San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count identified 95 species in August. No new bird species were seen, so the cumulative species total remains at 238. Click here for the PDF document with the detailed monthly results through August 2018.

Bird count leader Jayne Lesley reported, “Though it is very dry and quiet, and bird numbers seem low, all groups had good species diversity. Most summer breeding birds are still around (Bell’s Vireos still singing) and shore birds are coming in.”

The featured image of a Double-crested Cormorant was taken at the San Dieguito Lagoon in April 2018 by SDRP Trail Patrol Volunteer Ginni Kitchen. These birds are so named because of the tufts of feathers on the sides of their heads. They can be seen year-round and love to congregate on the utility lines above the San Dieguito River parallel to the Jimmy Durante Blvd. bridge.
