The San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count identified 118 species in February. No new bird species were seen this month, so the cumulative species total remains at 242. Click here for the PDF document with the detailed monthly results through February 2019.

The featured image of a Reddish Egret with a freshly-caught fish was taken at the San Dieguito Lagoon by SDRP Trail Patrol Volunteer Ginni Kitchen in January 2019. This lone Reddish Egret has been seen very actively fishing around the Boardwalk since the end of December. The only other time a Reddish Egret has been counted at the San Dieguito Lagoon was for three months in 2010. This makes sense, because the American Bird Conservancy’s website says, “The Reddish Egret is one of the rarest egrets in North America.” It mainly lives and breeds on the coasts of Mexico, the Gulf Coast states, and the Caribbean islands.
