The San Dieguito Lagoon Bird Surveys have been conducted monthly by skilled Audubon volunteers since January 2010. These volunteers are led by Jayne Lesley, Mona Baumgartel, and Sue Smith, and they were recognized this year at the San Dieguito River Park’s annual volunteer appreciation party and received Outstanding Volunteer Service awards. December’s bird survey marks 5 years of bird counting at the San Dieguito Lagoon, and a cumulative total of 223 species have been seen.
In December’s survey, 114 bird species were identified.Click here for the PDF document with the detailed monthly results from 2010-2014.
The photo of a Greater Roadrunner above was taken by SDRP Volunteer Trail Patrol member Ginni Kitchen. Greater Roadrunners have recently been spotted on the Coast to Crest Trail along San Andres Dr. between the San Dieguito Lagoon Staging Area driveway and the interpretive kiosk, and they have also been spotted around the Birdwing Open Air Classroom and occasionally at the Dust Devil Nature Trail. They can also be frequently seen around Lake Hodges and in San Pasqual Valley.
