76 bird species were identified in July’s bird survey. Lead birder Jayne Lesley reported sightings of a few notable species, like Blue Grosbeaks (including 4 near the San Andres Dr. Interpretive Kiosk), Least Bell’s Vireos along the river through Del Mar Horsepark, Greater Roadrunners at Dust Devil Nature Trail, Yellow Warblers along the river, and a Tricolored Blackbird at Del Mar Horsepark. The cumulative species total remains at 226.
The Blue Grosbeak is a member of the cardinal family and “has been expanding breeding range toward the north in recent decades” according to the Audubon Guide to North American Birds. The photo above was taken at the San Dieguito Lagoon by SDRP Volunteer Ginni Kitchen.
