The San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count identified 95 species in July- which is another monthly record! Again, no new bird species were seen, so the cumulative species total remains at 242. Click here for the PDF document with the detailed monthly results through July 2019. Note: a Wilson’s Phalarope was also seen but was accidentally left off the list.

Bird Count Leader Jayne Lesley reported, “A good assortment of migrant shorebirds has begun to arrive already!”

The featured image of a Spotted Sandpiper was taken at the Lagoon Viewpoint at Old Grand Avenue Bridge by SDRP Trail Patrol Volunteer Ginni Kitchen in April 2017. According to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds website, “The Spotted Sandpiper is the most widespread breeding sandpiper in North America.” They are usually absent from the San Dieguito Lagoon in June and July, but they have been counted every other month of the year.
