The San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count identified 109 species in March. No new bird species were seen, so the cumulative total remains at 234. Click here for the PDF document with the detailed monthly results through March 2017.

According to bird count leader Jayne Lesley, some noteworthy birds were a Canvasback and Canada Geese that have stuck around in the area between the freeway and Horsepark on the north side of the river; Virginia and Ridgway’s Rails, American Goldfinch, and Tree Swallows looking for nesting tree holes in the Horsepark and polo fields area; Violet-green, Rough-wing, and Tree Swallows, Redheads, and Ibis in the Dust Devil Nature Trail area; a Common Merganser in the river and Red-throated Loons on the ocean; and a Red-breasted Merganser in the area between Jimmy Durante Blvd. and the freeway on the south side of the river.
