The San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count identified 101 species in May and 97 species in June- a record for the month of June! No new bird species were seen, so the cumulative species total remains at 242. Click here for the PDF document with the detailed monthly results through June 2019.
According to Bird Count Leader Jayne Lesley, “Blue Grosbeaks finally arrived” in June, and we have also had a couple unusual visitors this year (only seen 4 times previously, years ago) – Yellow-crowned Night-Herons. A Ring-necked Duck was also spotted in May for only the second time since the count started.
The featured image of juvenile and adult Yellow-crowned Night-Herons was taken at the San Dieguito Lagoon Boardwalk by SDRP Trail Patrol Volunteer Ginni Kitchen in June 2019. We wrote about them when they were new to the count in August 2015.
