The San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count identified 98 species in November. No new bird species were seen this month, so the cumulative species total remains at 235. Click here for the PDF document with the detailed monthly results through November 2017.

According to bird count leader Jayne Lesley, there was an assortment of ducks, with lots of American Wigeon and the first Bufflehead of the season. Other noteworthy birds were a Merlin being chased by two Kingbirds, a Loggerhead Shrike, American Pipits all over the lagoon (including over 50 on the grass soccer fields on the east side of El Camino Real), Canada Geese and a Snow Goose also at the soccer fields, three Roadrunners, several Dunlin, and Horned Larks.

SDRP Trail Patrol Volunteer Ginni Kitchen took the featured image of an American Wigeon at the San Dieguito Lagoon in December 2015, and she took the below image of a Bufflehead at the Old Grand Avenue Bridge in January 2017. The arrival of these duck species and the geese is just the beginning of winter migration.
