Palomar Audubon Society Trip Leaders guide birders around different areas of Lake Hodges, like Del Dios Community Park, the Boat Dock, and Bernardo Bay, every year in spring and fall. The list of bird species seen is then posted on the PAS website. SDRP has compiled the lists since October 2013 into a PDF document.
51 bird species were identified in September 2017, with the Royal Tern being seen for the first time. 49 bird species were identified in November 2017, with the Ross’s Goose being seen for the first time, which is a rare sighting for Lake Hodges. A cumulative total of 127 different species of birds have been seen over the past 14 bird walks.
The featured image of a Royal Tern was found on the Audubon Guide to North American Birds website and was taken by Arthur Morris. Royal Terns are more commonly found during winter than summer in California.
