The San Dieguito River Park and Conservancy hosted a 3-day event for Apple’s Distinguished Educators program. Over 300 educators from 31 countries attended. The overall theme was preservation, restoration and observation. The participants engaged in 5 stations that integrated nature and technology. The stations were Birds and Binoculars, the Art of Nature, Lagoon Ecosystems, Water Quality Sampling and a Ranger Walk.
At Birds and Binoculars participants use binoculars, telescopes and interactive bird apps to observe lagoon species. They learned how to recognize different birds based on their characteristics and distinguishing features.
At the Art of Nature participants utilized specimens collected from the Lagoon to create artwork. This activity provided attendees the opportunity to express their nature experience through art.
Lagoon Ecosystems participants observed lagoon aquatic species up close while ecologists discuss their significance.A Park Ranger discussed the importance of the lagoon ecosystem and history of the 115-acre San Dieguito Tidal Wetland Restoration.
Water Quality Sampling participants tested water samples from different locations at the lagoon. Samples were tested using Pasco probes for dissolved oxygen and salinity. The results were displayed on the iPads. These are all important indicators of ecosystem health.
The Ranger-led Walk participants were lead on an interactive walk along the Lagoon Trail observing and discussing the natural history of the Park. Participants used the San Dieguito River Park Apps to locate, identify and report plant and animal sightings.
Overall, it was a fun and whirlwind event. The Apple Distinguished Educators used #ade2014 on their posts during the event, so search Twitter for that hashtag for more photos and videos!
