Palomar Audubon Society Trip Leaders guide birders around different areas of Lake Hodges, like Del Dios Community Park, the Boat Dock, and Bernardo Bay, every year in March, October, and November. The list of bird species seen is then posted on the PAS website. SDRP has compiled the lists since October 2013 into a PDF document.
59 bird species were identified in March 2017. A cumulative total of 125 different species of birds have been seen over the past 12 bird walks.
The featured image of a Hooded Oriole was taken at the San Dieguito Lagoon in May 2017 by SDRP Trail Patrol Volunteer Ginni Kitchen. Hooded Orioles and Bullock’s Orioles have always been seen during the March bird walks, but never the October or November bird walks. This makes sense because, according to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds website, they come north to breed in the summer and spend winters further south in Mexico.
